Incorporated in 1959, Half Moon Bay offers a wide variety of public as well as private attractions. The City rests on the Pacific Coast between forested hills and some of the most breathtaking coastlines that California has to offer. It is located approximately 25 miles south of San Francisco and lies within the County of Sam Mateo. The historic downtown is home to numerous shops, art galleries, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and other businesses. Local beaches and parks can be easily accessed by pedestrians, bikes and equestrians. Golf can be enjoyed at two of California's finest courses. The City and coastside are home to numerous nurseries and farms. The Pumpkin Festival held in October draws hundreds of thousands of people to the coast to enjoy its panoramic vistas, fine cuisine, arts, crafts and genuine hospitality. Temperatures are mild and the valleys are rich. Half Moon Bay and the coastside are proud of their floriculture center where roadside stands sell locally grown vegetables such as, artichokes, greens, pototoes, beans and herbs. You can not top the fresh seafood available everywhere in restaurants or to take home and prepare yourself. Residents of this charming community live a lifestyle that many think no longer exists in California. Neighbors care about each other, schools are important, and there is a sense of real community. Spanish Town, or Half Moon Bay as it has been named by the residents, is the oldest settlement in San Mateo County, dating back to the 1840's. Traces of its past are visible in the many historic buildings as you explore the communities that run up and down the Coastside. The area between Devil's Slide and Ano Nuevo boasts a very colorful past from the Spanish Land Grants in the 1840's to the Ocean Shore Railroad at the turn of the century, the rumrunners of the 1930's and the ever-increasing popularity of today. The Coastside is nestled between the dramatic green Santa Cruz Mountains and the ever powerful Pacific Ocean. Because of the perceived geographic isolation of the area has not changed dramatically over the years. However, now with Highway 92 cutting across the mountains to the Peninsula and Highway 1 running north and south the Coastside is very accessible to the entire Bay Area.
Half Moon Bay boasts more than 100 acres of park and open space land including bike paths, dog exercise areas, a lighted softball field, numerous soccer and youth baseball fields, tennis courts (night playing available), basketball courts, picnic facilities, par courses, and a wildlife refuge.
Half Moon Bay is the home of the world famous "Mavericks" breakwater with waves so large that the greatest surfers in the world visit annually for an invitation-only competition.
